Meet the experienced and friendly doctors and staff who make Portz and Jones a proud provider of vision care products and services in Red Oak.


Travis Jones, OD

Dr. Jones graduated magna cum laude from the University of Houston College of Optometry in 2015 and started practice at the Willis Knighton Eye Institute in Shreveport, Louisiana. He worked with an Ophthalmologist that specializes in refractive (LASIK, SMILE, PRK) and cataract surgery. Dr. Jones performed laser procedures for glaucoma (SLT) and poster capsular opacification after cataract surgery (YAG). He fit specialty contact lenses for patients with a variety of corneal conditions including keratoconus, status post corneal grafts, ocular surface disease, and irregular astigmatism. Dr Jones was on call and available for after hours treatment for the Willis Knighton Hospital System and surrounding rural health clinics (outpatient, inpatient, and ERs).

He also worked alongside a retinal specialist starting in 2017, excelling in the detection and management of retinal tears and detachments, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. He maintained these positions until 2022 when he moved to Iowa to be closer to family.


Michael J Portz, OD

Michael J Portz, OD graduated from Atlantic High School in Atlantic, IA and attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, NE before his acceptance into the Southern California College of Optometry. He graduated in 1979 with the distinction of magna cum laude and was invited to stay at the College as an instructor. After two years on the faculty, he returned to Iowa in 1981 when he joined the practice of Ronald F Mills, OD. Dr Portz purchased the practice in 1991 and has been providing comprehensive vision care to the residents of Red Oak and southwest Iowa ever since. He attained Fellowship in the American Academy of Optometry in 1983 and was elected to the Iowa Optometric Association Board of Directors where he served as President from 2001-2002. In 2012, he was appointed to the Iowa Board of Optometry Examiners by Governor Terry Branstad where he served three terms and was Chairman from 2018-2020. Dr Portz has been involved in local civic activities along with fundraising efforts for the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital, the Montgomery County Family YMCA, and the Wilson Performing Arts Center. In his spare time, he enjoys golf, bicycling, yard work, car detailing, and spending time with his three granddaughters. He remains an avid Nebraska Cornhuskers fan. He is married to the former Joyce Porter of Essex, IA and they are both looking forward to travel and more time spent with grandkids in their retirement years.
